A flat stomach is a common fitness goal, but it takes more than exercise. Your diet may shape your abs. Delicious high-calorie meals can be hidden time bombs for your waistline, so avoid them if you want to lose stubborn belly fat.
We asked Dr. Mo Janson, MD and general practitioner, which meals we should avoid since they are ‘calorie bombs.’ Janson said sugary drinks are a major way to ruin your flat tummy.
Sodas, fruit juices, and energy drinks might hinder flat stomachs. These beverages include empty calories from added sugars, which can cause weight gain and belly fat. Excess sugar increases insulin levels and abdominal fat accumulation.
Excess sugar, especially fructose in high-fructose corn syrup, increases visceral fat, which accumulates around the abdominal organs. Janson says this fat can cause metabolic syndrome and heart disease.
He also notes that carbonated sodas' fizz might cause bloating and gas, making the stomach appear bigger. Some beverages with too much salt might cause temporary water retention.
Overall, Janson states that in order "to achieve a flatter stomach and improve overall health, it's advisable to limit or eliminate sugary beverages from your diet. Opt for healthier alternatives like water, herbal tea, or unsweetened beverages."
It's also a good idea to consider cutting down on added sugars in your diet and prioritize a balanced, whole-foods-based eating regimen.
